Twisted Grass Hat



sizes – [S] (1.5-2.5 years), [M] (3-4 years)

both sizes have the same number of stitches, but the [M ]hat has extra rows as indicated


Gauge – 25st & 29r over 4" in the 2:1 rib pattern


You will need:

Aran weight yarn - the one I used was .515grams/yard merino superwash wool

5.0 mm needles (circular or DPN)

Stitch Markers


Stitches:

CF – Cable Front – slip the first 2 stitches onto cable needle and hold in front. K2, p1, then knit 2 sts off

CB – Cable Back - slip the first 3 stitches onto cable needle and hold behind. K2, then p1, k2 off cable

Cast on 44 sts using a stretchy cast on technique. I used Jeny's Super Stretchy Cast On. (or just use your favourite cast on using 6mm needles.)

Back Flap

Work 3 rows 2:1 rib

Row 1: k2, *(p1, k2) repeat from * for the rest of the row, turn

Row 2: p2, *(k1, p2) repeat from * for the rest of the row, turn

Row 3: k2, *(p1, k2) repeat from * for the rest of the row, turn


  Continuing to work in 2:1 rib, increase 1st at both ends of every second row until you have 60 sts

Row 4: p2, Inc1, *(k1, p2) repeat from * until the last 2 sts, Inc1, p2, turn

Row 5: work pattern as established (i.e. purl on a purl, knit on a knit) , turn

Row 6: p2, Inc1, p1, work pattern as established until the last 2 sts, Inc1, p2, turn

Row 7: work pattern as established, turn

Row 8: p2, Inc1, p2, work pattern as established until the last 2 sts, Inc1, p2, turn

Row 9: work pattern as established, turn

Row 10: p2, Inc1, p2, work pattern as established until the last 3 sts, k1, Inc1, p2, turn

Row 11: work pattern as established, turn

Row 12: p2, Inc1, work pattern as established until the last 2 sts, Inc1, p2, turn

Row 13: work pattern as established (i.e. purl on a purl, knit on a knit) , turn

Row 14: p2, Inc1, p1, work pattern as established until the last 2 sts, Inc1, p2, turn

Row 15: work pattern as established, turn

Row 16: p2, Inc1, p2, work pattern as established until the last 2 sts, Inc1, p2, turn

Row 17: work pattern as established, turn

Row 18: p2, Inc1, p2, work pattern as established until the last 3 sts, k1, Inc1, p2, turn

Row 19: work pattern as established, turn


[M] size only:

Work 2 rows even in 2:1 rib pattern

Hat Body

Using your Stretchy Cast On, CO 30 sts, place a Marker between stitch 29 & 30 and join in the round.

Work 4 rounds in 2:1 ribbing, ending at the Marker.


10 Row Cable Pattern:

Cable Round 1: *(k2, p1, CF, p1) repeat from * for the rest of the round

Work 4 rounds in 2:1 ribbing, ending at the Marker.

Cable Round 2: *(CB, p1, k2, p1) repeat from * for the rest of the round

Work 4 rounds in 2:1 ribbing, ending at the Marker.


Work the 10 row cable pattern twice more (for a total of 34 rounds)


[M] size only:


Cable Round 1: *(k2, p1, CF, p1) repeat from * for the rest of the round

Work 4 rounds in 2:1 ribbing, ending at the Marker.


Decrease Section

Round 1: *(k2, p1, k2tog, p1, k2, p1) repeat from * for the rest of the round (only the middle cable should be

decreased - 80 sts)

Round 2 & 3: *(k2, p1, k1, p1, k2, p1) repeat from * for the rest of the round

Round 4: *(k2tog, p1, p2tog, k2tog, p1) repeat from * for the rest of the round (50 sts)

Round 5 & 6: *(k1, p2, k1, p1) repeat from * for the rest of the round

Round 7: *(p2tog) repeat from * for the rest of the round (25 sts)

Round 8: purl all sts

Round 9: p1, *(p2tog) repeat from * for the rest of the round (13 sts)

Round 10: p1, *(p2tog) repeat from * for the rest of the round (7 sts)

Cut yarn and pull through remaining sts, secure and weave in.
