thumb:

pick up sts from scrap yarn on 2 needles

pick up 3 sts from hand to close gusset (the bottom loop of center st that is splitting and m1 on either side)

re-attatch working yarn with sts right of picked up sts

cut pull trough sts and weave in fix any holes not already closed

weave in all loose ends

for right hand flip the order of the sts in pattern. except for the actual cabling portion(it should always be c1b, c1f in that order)
